Our Chiropractor in Frisco Explains The Importance of a Healthy Spine
With the exception of those who live with daily back or neck pain, it's understandable that the majority of us don't spend too much time thinking about our spines. We wake up, stretch and go about our routine with the understanding and expectation that all things spine-related are as they should be. According to some well-researched statistics, however, an estimated 80-90% of all adults will, at some point in their life, find themselves dealing with a spinal issue. In addition to those who've been involved in an accident, those most at risk include:
- Smokers and tobacco users
- Individuals who are moderate to severely overweight
- Those in physical professions requiring heavy lifting
- Office employees and executives who sit in desks for extended hours
- Individuals with a family history of neck, spine and back problems
- Older adults whose physical activity has consistently declined
The above represents an incomplete list, of course. Back problems can come on very suddenly and are completely non-discriminating in who they affect. This makes it all the more important to take proactive measures to achieve and maintain a healthy spine.
How To Help Correct Your Posture
Some of the most common back and spine problems are the results of poor posture over many years. The effects might not be felt immediately, but they can eventually manifest into pain and a state of unceasing discomfort. A chiropractor can help you improve posture, thus taking pressure off the back and allowing the spine to remain strong and functional.
As we've mentioned in other articles, healthy circulation is essential for the delivery of nutrients and cellular repair compounds throughout the body; the spine is certainly no exception. Cigarettes and other nicotine-based products contain over 4,000 chemicals and toxins; many of which are known to impede healthy blood flow. If a healthy spine is high on your list of health priorities, quitting smoking is a very wise place to start.
Build Core Strength
The core muscles of the abdomen, oblique and lower back have a very defined purpose that, for some reason, most people never pay much attention to. In addition to carrying out specific movements related to each muscle group, our core muscles also help alleviate the strain placed on our spine. Building them up will inadvertently help balance weight distribution, easing tension and helping the spine do its job more effectively.
Practice Proper Sitting and Standing
This may sound too basic to be effective, but you would be amazed at how much is damage is done simply from years of improper standing and sitting. When you're sitting down, try to avoid slouching by ever-so-slightly pinching your shoulder blades together. If you're at a computer all day, keep the monitor at eye-level to avoid staring downward. When you stand up or if you stand for extended periods, don’t lock your knees. Allow a little bend and bounce to absorb shock and lessen the strain on the spine.
Improve Your Sleeping Habits
Proper sleep habits are paramount for anyone seeking a healthy spine. If your bed is old and worn out, invest in a new one. Keep your room dark to help initiate the body's natural melatonin production, and steer clear of watching TV right before bed. For more tips check out our article on Chiropractic for Improved Sleep.
